Students not only will enjoy the experience and learn about the facts involved, they will also use critical thinking skills, ask questions and discuss the material and be asked to devise their understanding and opinion about what happened in Deerfield in 1704. The site is well organized, well designed and easy to use.
Description:
This multimedia site shares the many perspectives and stories involved with the historical raid on Deerfield. Using timelines, audio, songs, images, artifacts, a game and stories, learn and form your own opinions about the conflict. From the website: "The goals of this website are threefold: 1) Engage the audience in plausible and compelling stories; 2) Accurately and fairly represent competing perspectives surrounding a controversial event; and 3) Insure an equitable and sophisticated interpretation of the material. To achieve these goals, we have stressed the following program elements: collaborative process; multiple perspective design; programming innovation."
Possible uses:
This site can be used as a unit study all on its own. Teachers can introduce the project sharing the site´s introduction on a projector. From there students can explore a component of the site, followed by discussion. Teachers can find lesson plans to use with the site. Students can also use the site for research. This project can stand alone or be used within an American history study. Or use it to study how to gather data from multiple perspectives and search for the `truth´ within the stories.
